COVET THY NEIGHBOUR

This exhibition draws from Catholic iconography not to critique it but to inhabit its visual language : the dramatic contrast of light and shadows, the contorted poses of ectasy and suffering, the theatratical staging of private moments. Wibaux treats religious imagery as inherently erotic, recognizing what the Church often denies : that depictions of martyrdom, spiritual ecstasy, amd bodily transcendence have always carried a charged physicality.

This exhbition title “Covet Thy Neighbour” points to the inherent contradiction at its center - the commandment against desire placed alongside its object. Wibaux works within this contradiction, creating images that refuse to choose between the sacred and the profane, instead recognizing they are perpetually entangled.
